Dana Point Headlands Nature Preserve Walking Tour

Enjoy a Dana Point Tour

Enjoy a Dana Point Tour

This walking tour takes you to the highest point on the Dana Point coastline for a breathtaking view of the harbor and the coastline. At this promontory on Dana Point, your guide will describe the view as observed by author Richard Henry Dana on his arrival here in the 1820s and the progressive development of the harbor to its current commercial and recreation form today.

Your path then leads us to a nature trail in the newly opened Dana Point Nature Preserve on the Headlands of Dana Point. At the entrance to the preserve, you'll stop at the Nature Interpretive Center where exhibits chronicling the history and environment of the Dana Point Headlands are available.

The Nature Preserve, the nearly untouched bluff area overlooking the Pacific, has numerous animal and plant species. Your guide will point out the unique native vegetation and animal life.

As you complete your walk, your guide will offer you the option of a trail down the bluff to a famous and formerly remote surfing beach. This beach area continues to be a particularly popular spot for surfing, as it has been since the early long board days of the 1940s. A modest-size offshore reef creates high quality and dependable left swells.

You'll walk along the new concrete path to the north end of the headlands to the inclined beach elevator, the funicular, that goes back to the bluff level.

During your tour, you will view a large building project with many ocean view homes just above the sand and up the slope to the bluff above.

On completion of the walk, you may sit on a bench at the bluff level and view this beautiful area. In winter, you may observe the migrating California gray whale.
